Theme: We Know that as Christians we are called to follow Jesus, to do as He did throughout his ministry. We remember all those who cry out for help and healing. We pray we will find ways to be the Hands of Christ as we choose to be faithful to continue the mission of Jesus as healers. Joan: Opening Prayer: Holy One. There are times we are blind to the needs of others. There are simple ways to reach out to the suffering around us. Our words of encouragement are a source of love in the ways we help others to see a path to hope that will bring them peace. There are times we are blind to our own needs. Give us the wisdom to be open to the wisdom of others and seek spiritual support in our hour of need.

Liturgy of the Word

Mary Al: First Reading: Adapted from the writings of Deacon Kayuma from Uganda.

Blindness is a great spiritual symbol of a weakened and impaired spiritual vision. In this blindness, we see not the splendor of the Divine nor do we see as God sees.

Each of us, in varying degrees, struggles with spiritual blindness. And each of us needs guidance in order to open our minds to embrace a different perspective. Praying for and loving our enemies, associating with the outcasts of society and upholding justice born out of charity, are some fruits of a heart that received from the Divine within us.

When we follow our own ways, seeking our own interests; when we see the world and those around us as mere means — either a threat or an opportunity for me to get what I want — spiritual blindness is at work.

Amidst all this blindness, Jesus enters the life of his disciples. He comes so that those who do not see might see.

His way is that of love and compassion. He is the light of the world through whom we see and move, and without whom we would perish. He gives sight back to the blind.

Jesus brings forth new life by giving us that light, the Holy Spirit — the prerequisite for our sight in our spiritual life.

Humbling ourselves and surrendering to the ministry is the only way to get rid of spiritual blindness and begin seeing the world through the eyes of the Divine.

These are the prophetic words of Deacon Kayuma, a young

man from Uganda, and the Community responds:

Jeanne: Today’s Gospel is from the writings of the apostle called Mark:

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with the disciples and a large crowd a blind beggar named Bartimaeus ben-Timaeus, was sitting at the side of the road. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and to say, “Heir of David, have pity on me!”

Many people scolded him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the louder, “Heir of David, have pity on me!”

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.”

So they called the blind man. “Don’t be afraid,” they said.

“Get up; Jesus is calling you.” So throwing off his cloak, Bartimaeus jumped up and went to Jesus.

Then Jesus said, “What do you want me to do for you?

”Rabbani,” the blind man said, “I want to see.”

Jesus replied, “Go, your faith has saved you.” And immediately Bartimaeus received the gift of sight and began to follow Jesus along the road.

Joan: Let us proclaim together our Statement of Faith.

We believe in the Holy One, a divine mystery
beyond all definition and rational understanding,
the heart of all that has ever existed,
that exists now, or that ever will exist.

We believe in Jesus, messenger of the Divine Word,
bringer of healing, heart of Divine compassion,
bright star in the firmament of the Holy One's prophets, mystics and saints.

We believe that we are called to follow Jesus
as a vehicle of divine love,
a source of wisdom and truth,
and an instrument of peace in the world.

We believe in the Spirit of the Holy One,
the life that is our innermost life,
the breath moving in our being,
the depth living in each of us.

We believe that the Divine kin-dom is here and now,
stretched out all around us for those
with eyes to see it, hearts to receive it,
and hands to make it happen.

PRAYERS OF THE COMMUNITY

Marry Al: As we prepare for the sacred meal, we bring to this table our blessings, cares, and concerns. Please feel free to voice your concerns beginning with the words “I bring to the table….”

We bring to the table all those suffering from the devastations of war, and we pray for them that peace will become a reality in their lives.

Response: Holy One, we trust in You.

We bring to the table all those who are experiencing the tragic destruction of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. We pray that they may receive all of the support and aid that they need.

We bring to the table our country, as we approach election day. We pray that Americans vote intelligently and listen to the wisdom of the Spirit for the survival of our democracy.

Jeanne: Divine Spirit, You are always with us. We are grateful for Your constant loving and unconditional presence. You give us life, and we live and breathe with you Spirit. You create us female and male; You call us good, and we live as equal partners. You raise our consciousness to the blindness within us. We believe the Gospel message of healing those

we meet along the way. You share the earth with us, and we, as co-creators with you, on your ongoing activity of creation.

Joan: O Heart of Love, Your Spirit moved as she taught us that we are in continuous communion with you. Your Spirit moves through the love within us, expanding in widening circles to embrace all people and creation in our evolving universe. United with all our blessed ancestors, with Mary of Magdala and all women and men who confronted the structures of oppression in their times with unique vision and compassion, we sing:

With open hands and hearts, let us pray together our Eucharistic prayer:

Come forth Sacred Spirit and be with us at our Eucharistic Table and send light and blessing upon the bread of the grain and wine of the grape which reminds us of our call to be the body of Christ in the world. As we share this bread and cup we proclaim and live the gospel of justice and peace. We commit to following you, practicing what you continue to teach us:

We choose to live justly,

love tenderly,

and walk with integrity

Dotty: On the night before he faced betrayal and death, Jesus shared the Sadar meal with his friends. He reminded them of all that he taught them, and to fix that memory clearly with them, he bent down and washed their feet.

Lift the plate and pray the following:

When he returned to his place at the table, he lifted the bread, spoke the blessing, broke the bread, and offered it to them saying:

Take and eat, this is my very self.

Lift the cup and pray the following:

Then he took the cup of the covenant, spoke the grace, and offered it to them saying:

Take and drink.

Whenever you remember me like this, I am among you.

What we have heard with our ears, we will live with our lives; as we share communion, we will become communion, both Love’s nourishment and Love’s challenge.

Please consume the bread and drink the cup with the words: We are one with our God.
